A Message from our Principal

Dear Parents and Students,

I am so excited to welcome you to a new school year! The faculty and staff are busy preparing the school and your classrooms for a year of student learning and growth. We are looking forward to hearing about your summer vacation, seeing our Welty families, and meeting our newest Roadrunners.

Academic achievement is the goal of every member of the Welty staff. We believe in continuing to offer the highest quality education to your children. I ask for your support and participation in this effort by sending your children to school on time, everyday. We ask that you read with your children at least thirty minutes every night, monitor their homework and academic progress, and ask your child to share what they learned in school each day.

The faculty and staff at Mary L. Welty will always strive to provide a positive and safe learning environment where your children will only have to focus on achieving their academic goals. Please note these important dates for the month of August 2014.

  • Kinder Parent Night – Monday, August 4, 6:00 p.m. Please meet in the cafeteria.
  • Meet Your Teacher Day! – Tuesday, August 5, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • First Day of Classes – Wednesday, August 6, 7:40 a.m.
  • Early Release – Wednesday, August 20, 12:45 p.m.
  • Early Release – Wednesday, August 27, 12:45 p.m.
  • Open House – Thursday, August 28, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Please meet in the cafeteria.

On the first day of school, we encourage all of our students to eat breakfast in the cafeteria from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Students will then have the opportunity to go outside and play on the main playground until 7:45 a.m. Our students will begin their first day by finding their teacher in the amphitheater for our welcome back ceremony. Our teachers will hold up a sign indicating their name and grade level. Once the ceremony is over, the students will line up and walk to their classrooms. We invite parents to join us for the welcome back ceremony, but we ask that you leave your child with their teacher once the ceremony is over.

From time to time, we send home important information with our students. It is a good idea to check their backpacks and their classroom folders daily. You may also check the following places for Roadrunner news: this website, the marquee, and the bulletin boards in the office.

The faculty and staff are eager to welcome you to another wonderful year! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at (520) 287-0880.

On behalf of the Mary L. Welty team,

Aissa Bonillas
Principal

Mary L. Welty Elementary School General Guidelines

  • All students must wear their school uniforms on the first day of school.
  • Students must be on time! Student attendance is crucial for student achievement. Classes begin promptly at 7:45 a.m. Multiple tardies will result in student consequences.
  • Breakfast and lunch will continue to be free. We will serve breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
  • Students will have homework on a daily basis. Check your child’s homework folder and backpack daily.
  • We expect students to be respectful and to follow all Nogales Unified School District and Mary L. Welty rules and procedures.
  • We allow no iPods, MP3 players, Game Boys, cell phones, iPads, or other electronic devices on campus. See our electronics policy for more information.
  • We allow no fighting or bullying on campus. We will follow Nogales Unified School District #1 guidelines, including a report to law enforcement. Each student and parent receives a copy of the district’s discipline matrix.
  • If your child is riding the bus, contact Citizen’s Auto Stage at (520) 281-0400, extension 4138 for a schedule or questions. In order for your child to ride the bus, we will screen your address to determine if the child is eligible for transportation. We will only provide transportation by bus to students whose home addresses are in the Mary L. Welty zone. Students under open enrollment are not eligible for bus service.
  • We urge you to become involved at Mary L. Welty. There are a number of ways in which parents and guardians can help. If you would like to be a school volunteer, please see Ms. Claudia Felix and ask for an NUSD parent volunteer form. All parent volunteers must be approved by Mrs. Bonillas, Principal and Nogales Unified School District Governing Board.
